About David

David working in his studio

I have experimented with various styles and subjects in the seven years I have been a full time artist. My approach is representational, playing particular attention to the play of light and shadow and perspective. I have painted a portrait, pet portraits, still lifes, dancers, and even an abstract or two. I have also made hundreds of greeting cards from photography, and from original art. The subject I keep returning to is landscape, particularly urban landscapes with people caught in a moment of action or reflection. I have experimented with watercolor, pastels, and pen and ink, but am most comfortable with acrylic paints, However, I am beginning to work with oil.

I was a librarian for thirty-six years, but in my heart I have always been an author and an artist. When I retired in 2002, I began to devote full time to painting, taking classes and lessons from Jane Filer, Steven Silverleaf, Lorrie Callahan, and Erick Davis, at the Arts Center in Carrboro, North Carolina. I have been active in organizing shows for artists at the Jump’n Java Café, students of Jane Filer, Arts Center Open Studio artists, Carrboro Public Library, and the Art and Soul Studios.

My goal as an artist is to create lasting works that might grace the life of those who own or view them, and be valued long after I am around. I am not afraid to revise a painting that I thought was completed earlier when new insight guides me.

I work at my home in Chapel Hill.
